About Litsea cubeba

May Chang (Litsea cubeba) is a tropical tree from the Lauraceae family, native to Southeast Asia. It can reach up to 12 meters in height and is distinguished by its shiny, lanceolate, and very aromatic foliage. When its leaves are crushed, an intense lemon scent is released. It grows naturally in humid and sunny areas of China or Vietnam, in fertile and well-drained soils. Thanks to its rapid growth and ability to adapt to different types of cultivation, Litsea is often integrated into sustainable agroforestry systems.

The essential oil is extracted by steam distillation from the tree's small, round fruits, which turn from green to black as they ripen. The result: an essence with a fresh, mild, and citrusy aroma, highly valued for its calming and purifying effects. When diffused, it promotes relaxation and purifies the environment. It is also used in cosmetics for its pleasant aroma, or in body care for its rebalancing properties, provided that usage precautions are observed.
