About the Plant

The sweet orange tree (Citrus sinensis) is an evergreen fruit tree belonging to the Rutaceae family. It generally reaches between 5 and 10 metres in height and is recognisable by its oval, dark green and shiny leaves, and its white flowers with a mild aroma, also known as neroli flowers. Its rounded and dense silhouette makes it a tree as ornamental as it is productive.

This citrus fruit thrives in warm and temperate climates, with sun exposure and protected from wind. It prefers to grow in light, well-drained soils rich in nutrients. The orange tree is commonly cultivated in Mediterranean regions, South America and certain subtropical zones, both in orchards and for ornamental purposes or in pots.

Its fruits, round and with an orange peel when ripe, are rich in sweet and aromatic juice. They are consumed fresh, as juice, or used in pastries, confectionery, and cosmetics. The rind and leaves can also be distilled to produce essential oils with calming, invigorating, or digestive properties, much appreciated in aromatherapy.
