About Clove

The clove tree (Eugenia caryophyllus) is a tropical evergreen tree belonging to the Myrtaceae family. It can reach 8 to 12 meters in height and has an elegant appearance, with leathery, dark green and shiny leaves. Its flowers, an intense red before blooming, are harvested in the form of flower buds — the famous cloves — before being dried or distilled.

Originally from the Moluccas Islands in Indonesia, the clove tree grows in warm, humid regions, in rich, deep and well-drained soils. It has been widely introduced to other tropical areas, such as Madagascar, Zanzibar or the Comoros, where it is cultivated for both culinary and medicinal purposes.

The flower buds, rich in eugenol, are used as a spice for their warm and spicy flavour, but also as a raw material for essential oil extraction. This is known for its antiseptic, analgesic and stimulating properties. In aromatherapy, it is often used for oral care, joint pain or physical fatigue.
